Choosing the right tarpaulin
A tarpaulin is more than a waterproof sheet. The base fabric, coating, weight, reinforcement, seam method and fixing system determine how it performs. A lightweight PE sheet can be ideal for temporary stock protection, while welded PVC is better for repeated transport or industrial exposure. Canvas is chosen when breathability matters, and fire-retardant material is specified when the risk assessment or client documentation requires it. Correct selection reduces premature tearing, leakage and unnecessary replacement.
PE tarpaulin
PE tarpaulin is woven polyethylene laminated on both sides. It is waterproof, lightweight, easy to handle and economical for temporary construction covers, landscaping, agriculture and general storage. Common heavy-duty specifications include 180, 200 and 250 GSM. Higher GSM generally adds body and tear resistance, but wind load, support points and handling frequency also matter.

PVC tarpaulin
PVC-coated polyester is the premium choice for truck sheets, machinery covers, partitions, welding curtains and long-term outdoor applications. It is strong, flexible, fully waterproof and suitable for heat-welded seams. Common weights include 300, 420, 500, 550, 580, 650, 700, 750 and 900 GSM. The grade can be matched to duty cycle, exposure, colour, flame-retardant requirement and fabrication detail.
Canvas tarpaulin
Canvas is selected where a breathable cover is preferable to a fully sealed plastic surface. Cotton or blended canvas helps limit trapped condensation around machinery, timber and stored products while offering strong abrasion resistance. Options include approximately 18 oz, around 610 GSM, and heavier 25 oz canvas, with waxed or proofed finishes. Canvas is stitched and can be reinforced with webbing, rope hems and eyelets.
Fire-retardant tarpaulin
Fire-retardant tarpaulin is designed to resist ignition and slow flame spread compared with ordinary material. Options may include 300 GSM FR PVC with supporting test documentation and heavier 680 GSM FR or anti-static grades. Fire-retardant does not mean fireproof. Certification must match the project specification, authority requirement and intended exposure.
Fabrication details
A correct material can still fail if poorly made or tied. We plan seam direction, hem width, reinforcement patches and eyelet spacing around actual loads. Corners and lifting points receive extra layers where needed. PVC panels are heat welded; PE and canvas may be stitched. Eyelets can be installed at approximately 50 cm, one metre or another specified spacing. Webbing loops, D-rings, sleeves and segmented construction can improve handling.
